Java - Sun - Oracle

Δημοσίευσηαπό c00kiemon5ter » Δευτ Αύγ 30, 2010 2:44 am

Has Oracle been a disaster for Sun's open source?

James Gosling, Java's inventor έγραψε:Yes, indeed, the rumors are true: I resigned from Oracle a week ago (April 2nd). I apologize to everyone in St Petersburg who came to TechDays on Thursday expecting to hear from me. I really hated not being there. As to why I left, it's difficult to answer: Just about anything I could say that would be accurate and honest would do more harm than good

Και προχθές η Google ανακοίνωσε οτι δε θα λάβει μέρος στη φετινή JavaOne - προφανώς εξ' αιτίας της πρόσφατης μήνυσης της Oracle για τη χρήση της Java στο Android.

The ASF will terminate its relationship with the JCP if our rights as implementers of Java specifications are not upheld by the JCP Executive Committee to the limits of the EC's ability. The lack of active, strong and clear enforcement of those rights implies that the JSPA agreements are worthless, confirming that JCP specifications are nothing more than proprietary documentation

interesting

it's seems that Oracle is continuing its campaing to get money of SUN's projects. Suing google , making java and other projects associeted with a cow to milk. The reason that java has become such a "giant" is because it was free, portable and it could be used in almost any enviroment. We have seen the damage Oracle has done: open office is almost dead (LibreOffice), OpenSolaris is dead (i think Solaris itself will suffer). I hope they don't do anything about MySQL , but i doubt it. If java loses support of one of the most proeminent java "user" and promoter ,Apache. then java is lost

The H έγραψε:High profile Java developer Bob Lee, best known for his work on Google's Guice Framework and on the specification for dependency injections patterns in Java, has publicly rejected Oracle's invitation to collaborate on the new Java Specification Requests (JSRs) for Java 7 and 8. 'Crazy Bob', as he is sometimes known, explained his decisions by stating that, as a committed supporter of open source, he says he is not prepared to contribute to a specification which is anti-competitive in nature. In his view the recent attempts to standardise Java Standard Edition fall into this category and do not belong in the open Java Community Process (JCP).
Lee is fully behind Apache's position of voting down all Java standards until Oracle makes test compatibility kits freely available. He states that he is not prepared to support the charade of having JSRs hedged by this kind of restriction within an open standardisation body

The H έγραψε:Mark Reinhold, Oracle's chief Java engineer, has announced that four Java Specification Requests (JSRs) crucial to the next two versions of Java have now been submitted to the Java Community Process (JCP). They specify the Java technologies detailed in the recently announced Plan B, under which JDK 7 will be released in mid 2011 without – lambda functions, Project Jigsaw (which concerns modularisation) and parts of Project Coin. This will be followed in late 2012 by JDK 8, which will include those omitted components from Java 7 and others. Plan A would have involved a Java 7 containing all of the features described above, but it would not have been ready to ship until mid 2012.
The draft specifications now released are JSRs 334 to 337.
JSR 334 – Small Enhancements for the Java Programming Language – defines a number of technologies developed as part of Project Coin. This collection of small language functions includes the addition of string cases to switch statements, better type inference using the Diamond operator to avoid tedious repetition of generic type parameters and a special try block, which takes care of correct resource allocation.
JSR 335 – Lambda Expressions for the Java Programming Language – concerns the introduction of closures. The concept is derived from functional programming, but has also now been introduced into non-functional languages such as C#, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby and Smalltalk. When called, closures reproduce their definition context, even where that context no longer exists outside of the function. The specification is being implemented as part of OpenJDK via Project Lambda.
JSR 336 – Java SE 7 Release Contents – is an umbrella specification containing additional JSRs and Java technologies. These include a new Concurrency API including a fork / join framework, improved performance when working with dynamically typed languages (JSR 292), a new File System API (JSR 203), support for Unicode 6.0 and JDBC 4.1 and the addition of Nimbus look and feel and JLayer components to the Swing GUI toolkit.
JSR 337 – Java SE 8 Release Contents – includes a module system aimed at liberating Java developers from "classpath hell" and an extended Collections Framework to allow collections to run more efficiently and in parallel.
Now that the JSRs have been submitted to the JCP, it is down to the Executive Committee to approve or reject them. The Apache Software Foundation has already announced that, unless Oracle changes its licensing strategy for the test compatibility kits (TCKs) required for Java certification, it will vote against Oracle's proposal
